July 2018: Teaching on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation
During the first two weeks of July, Josee Schryer, Veronica Melendez and I joined forces to teach photography at the Boys & Girls Club on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. With two classes of ten kids each, we used cameras to explore Lakota Star Knowledge - the stories and myths developed by the Lakota over generations to explain the relationship between their communities, the earth and the stars. We were overwhelmed by the creativity of our students. This photograph was taken by 11-year old RedGirl at the Badlands National Park during its annual Astronomy Festival.
